WHO WE ARE
Focus Points primarily serves low-income, Spanish-speaking immigrant families in northeast and north central Denver through family literacy programming.
In 2013, Focus Points expects to serve over 1,500 families. More than 95% of these people come from Spanish-speaking families, and the large majority are immigrants from Mexico. The population served is largely young, made up of new parents and their children. Most of them face tremendous obstacles because of poverty, lack of education and language barriers.
Focus Points directly targets this population, with programs for every member of the family. In addition, Focus Points also serves English-speaking students who read and write below an eighth grade level and want to earn a GED.
Focus Points employs two full-time Family Advocates who help families access health care, nutrition, utility assistance and other services. Focus Points uses the Family Development model, which encourages a partnership between families and advocates to set goals and help families become self-reliant. Families know that Focus Points will work with them in a respectful and positive manner to improve their lives. |
